Learn about ABA Therapy
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is an evidence-based practice designed to understand and improve behavior in individuals, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental challenges. This approach utilizes principles of behaviorism to analyze how behavior is influenced by the environment and to develop strategies that encourage positive changes.
Through careful observation and assessment, ABA therapists identify the specific behaviors that need to be addressed and determine the factors that contribute to those behaviors. This thorough understanding lays the foundation for effective intervention.
One of the core techniques employed in ABA therapy is positive reinforcement, which involves rewarding desired behaviors to increase their occurrence.
By providing immediate and meaningful rewards, therapists help individuals associate positive outcomes with specific actions, thereby motivating them to repeat those behaviors. This method is particularly effective in teaching new skills, enhancing communication, and improving social interactions. The emphasis on reinforcement not only promotes learning but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and confidence in the individual.

About Diana Ayoo
Diana Ayoo is a certified behavior analyst under the QABA (Qualified Applied Behavior Analysis) and IBAO (International Behavior Analysis Organization) certification boards.
She is also a mother to a neurodivergent child and the owner of Ayira’s Café, a restaurant that employs adults with neurodivergent conditions.
Her personal experience witnessing the transformative power of ABA therapy on her own child inspired her to pursue certification and dedicate her career to helping other families facing similar challenges.
In Kenya, however, there is a significant shortage of behavior analysts due to the lack of formal programs offering Applied Behavior Analysis education.
This shortage limits access to ABA therapy for neurodivergent children, further compounded by a lack of understanding from health practitioners and insurance companies, making support and recommendations for ABA therapy more difficult to obtain.
